New Advanced Sorting System Brings Increased Recycling Capability to Region
SONOMA COUNTY, Calif. (April 19, 2017) – Republic Services celebrated its enhanced recycling facility today that will enable Sonoma County to achieve their sustainability goals for years to come. The Sonoma County Recycling Center is capable of processing more than 200 tons of recyclable material per day, and is expected to increase the recycling capacity in the region.
“The new enhanced Recycling Center offers significant environmental benefits to the community and the customers we are fortunate to serve,” said Mike Caprio, area president of Republic Services. “We now have the ability to increase recycling efforts, while diverting valuable materials from the landfill. The facility has the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which offers a substantial contribution to the community’s climate protection goals.”
The existing 32,000-square foot Recycling Center was expanded with an additional 6,000-square feet constructed by ET Environmental, bringing the new combined square footage to 38,000. The processing system was designed and installed by the CP Group.
The facility offers a variety of features to provide flexible processing capabilities. The equipment includes two material processing options. The first is an in-feed conveyor for collected commercial materials such as cardboard, mixed paper, containers, film and plastics.
The second is a hopper-fed construction and demolition (also known as C&D) conveyance system with multiple sorting stations. The system includes a baler for packaging recyclable materials such as cardboard, mixed paper and other materials. The facility also has a separate bale storage building to protect the finished products from rain prior to shipment to market.
The enhanced Recycling Center was part of a three-year Solid Waste Advisory Group (SWAG) collaborative process between multiple municipalities, the County and a diverse group of public stakeholders. They identified three underserved waste streams; self-haul, commercial dry waste, and C&D waste materials that could be addressed with a robust recycling center and program.
Republic Services of Sonoma County employs 26 employees. They proudly serve over 265 commercial customers as well as thousands of residents throughout the year. Republic also operates the Central Landfill and five transfer stations in the County of Sonoma.

Waste Pro opened a new 14,000-sq.-ft. material recovery facility at its regional operations center in Sarasota, Fla.
“Waste Pro’s expansion is a wonderful addition to the southern end of Manatee County,” Manatee County Commissioner Robin DiSabatino said in a statement.
The facility originally opened in 2008 after a major renovation.
“We are proud to have partnered with Manatee County on this recycling initiative,” Waste Pro Division Manager Sean Jennings said in a statement. “We are committed to the community and are excited about the long term effects this will have on improving the quality of life for the residents in Manatee County.”

The SRQ Material Recovery Facility was designed by Tom Walter of the Walter Group of Sarasota and constructed by Metropole Construction of Fort Myers. The MRF is equipped to deal with Manatee County’s conversion to single-stream recycling, which went into effect last October. The facility will be processing up to 2,000 tons of mixed glass, metals, plastics, paper and cardboard, per month, from residential and commercial sources throughout unincorporated Manatee County.
High-tech, High-efficiency 15 TPH Commercial Single Stream Recycling System
SAN DIEGO, CA (January 30, 2017) – Resource Management Group (RMG), a San Diego-based materials management and recycling services provider, recently opened a new material recovery facility (MRF). Designed and installed by CP Group, the recycling system features MSS CIRRUS® optical sorting technology and is designed for both commercial and multi-family single stream processing.
“At RMG, we are very proud to be the first MRF built in the City of San Diego in over 16 years. We look forward to playing a larger role as a solution provider in support of the City’s recycling ordinance and the state of California’s mandated diversion goals,” says Armen Derderian, President and Chief Executive Officer of RMG.
Derderian continues, “Our focus now is to grow our commercial and multi-family single-stream volumes while still achieving high recovery rates. CP’s System Engineers had to deal with a number of challenges, like the diversity of the incoming material streams and significant space limitations. But they delivered. We are pleased with our system and its capabilities.”
The majority of the system input is a blend of commercial and multi-family single stream materials, including OCC, OMP, and plastic film. After loading onto the incline conveyor, the material goes through a manual pre-sort station where any over-size items are removed. The 3-deck CP OCC Screen recovers cardboard, and a CP Glass Breaker Fines Screen removes <2″ fines. The remaining material enters the MSS CIRRUS® optical sorter which is set up in a dual-eject configuration and positively ejects containers and fiber materials. This system is able to achieve a higher than 90% diversion with minimal manual sorting.

The MSS CIRRUS® sensing technology features heavily in the success of the system. It allows the operator to select the different types of materials that should be targeted for ejection.
In standard operation mode for this facility, the CIRRUS® positively identifies and extracts all containers (PET, HDPE, mixed plastics bottles, UBC and tin cans) into the first eject chute, and all mixed paper into the second eject chute, while allowing the residue to fall into the negative pass-through. Because a high percentage of the commercial and multi-family input stream consists of single sheets of paper as well as flexible packaging (plastic film), MSS’s proprietary air-assist system is installed to ensure proper material handling on the high-speed conveyor belt and through the detection and ejection zone.

L-VIS® Optical Sorter Receives Upgrade with ColorMask™ and WireHawk™ Technologies
Nashville, TN (September 20, 2016) – MSS, Inc., the optical sorter division of the CP Group, is introducing two technology updates for its L-VIS® high-resolution color and shape optical sorter.
ColorMask™ is MSS’s proprietary illuminated reference technology and is featured in all L-VIS® units. The most recent design update features improved sorting accuracy for materials with difficult colors and weak contrast, like dark green circuit boards and black insulated wires.
The L-VIS® analyzes materials in flight over the ColorMask™ illuminated reference which is adjustable in color and light intensity for maximum contrast and accuracy.
“The L-VIS® continues to handle increasingly challenging materials,” says Felix Hottenstein, MSS Sales Director. “The improved ColorMask™ technology now allows our customers to utilize L-VIS® in even more sorting applications.”
MSS has also updated WireHawk™, the software algorithm behind the company’s patented wire shape identification technology specifically designed for electronic and automotive scrap applications. WireHawk™ recognition for L-VIS® provides customers with increased recovery rates for even the smallest and thinnest wires, resulting in higher returns for high-value commodities.

For the third consecutive year, a facility with a CP Group system has received a SWANA Gold Award.
SAN DIEGO, CA (August 3, 2016) – For the third year in a row, the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) has awarded the Gold Excellence Award in the Recycling Systems category to a recycling system developed by CP Group.
The 2016 Gold Excellence Award in Recycling Systems was won by Republic Services’ Southern Nevada Recycling Center, located in North Las Vegas, NV. The system features next-generation separation technology designed, manufactured and installed by CP Group.
The massive 70 tons per hour recycling center, recognized as “North America’s largest and smartest residential recycling center” is capable of processing two million pounds of recyclables per day.
“The new system is a powerhouse,” says CP Group’s Patrick Nicol, Lead System Engineer of the system. “It is a dual-line recovery facility, designed to adapt to the ever-changing recycling stream. We are very proud of our partnership with Republic Services and applaud them for the investments made to advance recycling capabilities.”

Facility was redesigned to process single-stream recyclables.
The Scott Area Recycling Center, Davenport, Iowa, recently hosted a grand reopening of its material recovery facility (MRF), which was updated earlier this year to process singe-stream recyclables. The MRF, originally opened in 1995 to process dual-stream recyclables, now can process 10 tons per hour of residential single-stream material.
The equipment and changes to the facility were funded through a general obligation bond issued by Scott County that was secured with revenue agreements from theWaste Commission of Scott County and the cities of Davenport, Bettendorf and other commission members. The recycling equipment cost $3.1 million, which facility construction costing $4.6 million.
The facility design team included Foth Infrastructure and Environment LLC, De Pere, Wisconsin; FEH Design, Sioux City, Iowa; and KJWW Engineering Consultants, Des Moines, Iowa. Tricon Construction Group, with locations in Dubuque and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and the CP Group, San Diego, were responsible for facility construction.
The MRF includes an OCCScreen to remove cardboard, a CPScreen to separate 2D material from 3D material, an overbelt magnet, an eddy current separator and a glass cleanup system from the CP Group.
On hand for the ribbon cutting, along with members of the community and government officials, were Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) and ISRI Paper Stock Industries Chapter members Midland Davis, headquartered in Moline, Illinois, and Pratt Industries, headquartered in Conyers, Georgia.
Midland Davis has a long-term fiber marketing agreement with Scott County and recently partnered with Pratt Industries to purchase of much of the county’s paper. Within hours of curbside pickup, the paper is sorted, baled and shipped to Pratt’s new greenfield mill in Valparaiso, Indiana. Then within approximately 48 hours of receipt, it is made into new boxes that are sold primarily within the region, the companies say.
